Mission
DDOT shall coordinate and manage bridge construction within the District of Columbia; improve the District's economic competitiveness and quality of life by planning, coordinating, and operating the transportation system, and manage and maintain the transportation infrastructure, to ensure the safe, efficient movement of people, goods, and information along public right of way. (DDOT Establishment Act, D.C. Code § 50-921.03, -.04)

Bridge Inspection Manual of Procedures
FAQ: What is a bridge load rating?
The primary purpose of a bridge's load rating is to determine the live load that structures can safely carry to preserve public safety. In addition, load rating is required by the National Bridge Inspection Standards (NBIS) and for future improvement.
