A special tree is any tree with a circumference of 55 inches or more. (D.C. Code §8-651.02).

Procedures & Services
No one shall remove a special tree from either public space or private property without receiving a Special Tree Removal Permit from DDOT. All public space permit applications should be submitted and processed through DDOT's Transportation Online Permitting System (TOPS).
