Mission

DDOT shall provide a safe transportation system by maintaining a high quality traffic control system, including traffic signals and street lights, and incorporate transportation safety features in the development, design, and construction of pedestrian, bicycle, motor vehicle, and mass transportation facilities and programs. (DDOT Establishment Act, D.C. Code § 50-921.04).

Safety and the efficient movement of vehicles and pedestrians are the ultimate goals when evaluating and assessing traffic issues. (DDOT Design and Engineering Manual, Chapter 5: Traffic).


Procedures & Services

DDOT places and maintains traffic control devices on all District streets and highways as necessary to regulate, warn, or guide traffic.

DDOT shall adopt the Federal Highway Administration's (FHWA) Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) as the official standard for traffic signs, traffic signals, pavement marking, and traffic control devices. (DCMR 18-2100).
