When to Split a Roadway Section

How to decide when to split a roadway section and what features require a split.

When to Split and When not to Split

Split when...

  • A roadway feature (type) begins or ends - general rule of thumb.

  • An Intersection causes a change in lane identification 
  • A roadway section changes because of a curb cut

  • A roadway section splits off into two separate segments- split at the vertex of the line

  • A one way street begins/ ends
    • Nearmap

DON'T Split when...

  • Minor sidewalk configuration changes occur
  • Minor changes in lane width occur
  • Minor changes in lane type happen within a block
  • An alleyway or driveway intersects a roadway segment
  • A bus pad causes a change in roadway surface type
