Editing and Adding Supports and Signs

Select Support

To edit a support or a sign, first locate the feature on the map then click the feature. (for help finding features, see Querying Sign and Support Data)

The feature on the map will appear with a pink halo and the support and signs will appear in the right panel.  Each panel has an edit button (pencil icon ) in the bottom right corner.  Click the button to begin the editing process.

Edit Support

To edit the support, click the edit button (pencil) in the red panel, and the edit window will open (see image below).  The "Support Type" is the top dropdown box.  There are a range of options, including U-Post, single and double Meter Post, Wood Post and Streetlight.  The "Support Status" should be set to "Active" or "Retired".  Retired will remove the support from the map.  Other status choices are not supported in Inventory.  The Comment section allows remarks about the condition or nature of the support.  You can save or cancel your changes.  The ID at the top can be used for finding this particular support (see Querying Sign and Support Data).  The ID is not editable, but you can double-click it to easily capture the entire ID for copying.

Edit Signs

To edit a sign on the support, click the relevant sign edit button (also a pencil icon). The following window will open.

  1. The sign type and photo (if available) is in the top left.  To change a sign type you click in the input with the magnifying glass and can search by type or by code.
  2. For signs with time components, such as parking signs that have hours and days when parking is permitted or restricted, that information is captured in the bottom section.  To add time and dates, press the  button.  When entering the times and dates, if the information is incomplete or incompatible (i.e. ending times before starting times or ending dates before starting dates) will flash blue and a message will appear at the bottom of the form stating the nature of the error.  To delete a timeband, click the red 'X' button.  If you didn't mean to delete the timeband, don't save the changes!  Simply cancel the form and start again.

  3. The Status section will list only "active" and "retired" as enabled options.  All signs will default to active and should be listed as retired only when they no longer appear on that sign support. Note: if it appears a similar sign has replaced the old one (e.g., a new kind of parking sign) DO NOT edit the old one - retire the old one to make a record, and then add the new one in the new location.
  4. MPH lists the speed associated with the sign, if applicable.  For instance a speed limit sign would have the corresponding speed limit listed here.  For signs that do not have a speed associated with them, this section will not be editable.
  5. The Zone section lists the corresponding parking zones that the sign applies to if applicable.
  6. The Arrow buttons indicate the direction of the arrows on the sign, or will show this button  if the sign has no directional arrow.  The button highlighted in blue is the currently selected value.
  7. Sign Text is for additional verbiage on the sign that is not captured elsewhere.
  8. Comment is a space to write remarks or tags about the sign.
  9. A validation message will appear below the comment section if a timeband has a logical error.  The editor form should not save, nor can you add another timeband until the error is corrected.
  10. To save your changes, click SAVE.  Clicking on CANCEL will exit the editing screen without saving any changes.

Add New Support

When do I need to add a new support?

  • If a sign support exists in the field and you do not see it on the SignWorks map, it must be added!
  • NOTE: If a support is physically in the wrong location in the field, we can now adjust with the "MOVE SUPPORT" button over the CycloMedia window - previously was handled through Signworks Request.

To add a support:

  1. Open the StreetSmart window by right-clicking on the map near the area where the support is located.  If you already have the StreetSmart window open at the location, this is fine as well.  Either way , navigate in the StreetSmart window until you are viewing the exact spot of the support.
  2. At the bottom of the StreetSmart window there are three buttons.  Click the  button to switch the  viewer into Add Support mode.
  3.  If the sidebar doesn't retract on its own, click the double arrow button on the side to retract it for a better view.  Zoom in to clearly see the base of the support.  It may take a moment for the crosshairs/bulleye to appear, when they do, place the bulleye directly at the base of the support and single-click.
  4. After clicking on the point in the image where you want to add the support, the StreetSmart window will close and SignWorks will add a map point center on the new post you have created and select it for editing.   You can now edit the type of support and save.  The new point will appear on the map highlighted in pink like this:
  5. Make sure to edit your newly created support with the edit button  in the sidebar, so that it captures the support type and status that you want.

Click the right spot!

Adding a new support can be tricky at first. Make sure you:

  1. Zoom in to the base of the support. (Hint: make sure you can see the ground clearly)
  2. Click on the ground just in front of the support.
  3. Check your work. Look at where your pin appears on the map. If it looks right, keep it. If not, you can now use "MOVE SUPPORT" button to try again. Note that you can click-and-hold to move the window, and can go back in time, to get a better view of the base if something is in the way. Do not 1770783621if at all possible as that creates a false record of a support existing there - send in the ID for permanent deletion.

Moving A Support

If you need to move an existing support, the process is easy.

1) Make sure the support you need to move is the selected one.  There will be a magenta ring around the red point.

2) At the bottom of the StreetSmart panel, click the  button to switch to Move Support mode.

3) When the bullseye appears, move it to the desired new location and single-click.

4)  the map and the viewer will update to show the new position of the support.

Add New Signs

Click on the Add New Sign button  below the support section of the right hand panel to add a new sign to the currently selected support.  The editor will automatically open to add attributes to the new sign.

If you'd like to see a previously removed sign, exit out of the sign editor window and select 'Show Retired Signs'. If you would like to 'revive' a sign, you can edit the retired sign and change it's status to ACTIVE
