In Roads & Highways, trails are classified as a roadway type in the LRS (Linear Referencing System). A trail can either be "dedicated" or "on-street". 

Dedicated Trail

A trail in the LRS that does not follow the digitization of a street. For example, this portion of the Metropolitan Branch Trail (circled in red) is considered a dedicated trail...

On-street Trail

A trail that overlaps with the geometry of a street. Beginning portion of MBT along Union Station area...
