Mission
DDOT may designate any traffic lane on any roadway for the exclusive use of a single class of vehicle, or combination of classes of vehicles, such as buses, during certain hours. (DCMR 18-2220.1).
Bus lanes are a form of transit facility that can improve the speed, frequency, and efficiency of multiple bus and bus transit services. Typically, bus lanes should be implemented in corridors where a high volume of bus service already exists, particularly in downtown areas.
Procedures & Services
DDOT will coordinate with the Washington Metropoliaton Area Transit Authority (WMATA) and other stakeholders to determine which corridors and roadways in the District would benefit from the implementation of bus lanes.
